G7 Commitment to Increase the Deployment of Renewable Energy
The recent G7 Energy and Environment Ministers’ meeting in Sapporo, Japan, produced some positive outcomes. The ministers discussed adopting offshore energy and clean fuels in the transport industry. As well as promoting innovative technologies and evaluation methods for renewable energy. Additionally, they committed to significantly increasing the deployment of renewable energy. Ministers recognise that the current rates are insufficient to keep global temperatures below 1.5°C.
The ministers also announced support for decarbonizing the shipping industry, which is traditionally difficult.
This was achieved through the introduction of intermediate targets for 2030 and 2040 in the revised IMO GHG reduction strategy, as well as the establishment of green shipping corridors involving G7 members. These measures should drive the uptake of zero and near-zero-emission vessels and fuels and promote the development of decarbonized ports. Overall, the G7 ministers’ efforts to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy and decarbonize the shipping industry are a significant step towards addressing the urgent issue of climate change.
